Locations Visited On This Tour

Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage

The island’s No 1 visitor attraction is a very relaxed place to spend in the company of 70 elephants.

Minneriya National Park

Famous as the location for the Gathering Of Elephants each year from July-Sept when huge herds are observed.

The Sigiriya Rock Fortress

One of the great Wonders Of The Ancient World requires a bit of climbing but has that ‘wow’ factor in abundance

A very pretty town and the gateway to the Hill Country with lots of quaint reminders of colonial era Ceylon.

The Hill Country By Train

Beautiful mountain ranges covered with tea plantations and amazing waterfalls that are best experienced by train.

Yala National Park

One of the great national parks of Asia and the best location in the world to spot Leopards in the wild.

The ramparts of an Old Dutch Fort enclose a perfectly preserved town full of historic colonial buildings.

Beach Stay – Should You Choose The West Coast or East Coast?

From November to April, the West, South West and Deep South of the island experiences fine weather and calm seas. The tropical scenery and well established resorts make these areas popular even during the Summer months of July and August even though seas are slightly rough.

From May to October, the amazing East Coast beaches are among the finest in the entire world with shallow seas where you can just wade out for hundreds of feet into the sea!

Why Do This Tour?

If you are a family that likes to travel and want to see the whole of Sri Lanka using Family-Friendly hotels, this tour is a good option. This is a full tour of Sri Lanka lasting 8 days. Our flagship family program is probably the most comprehensive island-wide family tour currently available and includes visits to all of the major cultural and wildlife attractions in Sri Lanka.

The holiday begins with a day to recover from your flight at the beach resort of Negombo. Then journey to the Cultural Triangle, with lots of elephant-related activities on the way including the world famous Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage and the Millennium Elephant Orphanage located nearby.

Take a Jeep Safari to see large herds of wild elephants gather by the lake at Minneriya National Park and take a tour on Elephant Back around the beautiful Habarana Lake too. The ashtonishing Sigiriya Rock Fortress is a must for any family with grown up kids.

After sampling the magical atmosphere of Kandy, a breathtaking journey through the lush, tea covered Hill Country by train takes you to altitudes of over 6000 ft and the magnificent landscapes of the Eastern Hill Country of Sri Lanka.

Descending to the plains through more wonderful scenery you reach the jungles of Yala National Park where you have the best chance in the world to see a Leopard in the wild.

The beautiful South Coast Road passes picture-postcard tropical beaches of the Deep South of the island. Galle has a charming maze of streets with hundreds of historic buildings protected by the ramparts of a Dutch fort.

You can easily fit in a beach stay at the popular South West beach resorts or the wonderful Deep South in addition to this tour.

Recommended For: Families who wish to see the whole of Sri Lanka in an islandwide tour.

Frequestly Asked Questions About This Tour?

Are Family Rooms Available In Sri Lanka?

Family rooms with separate beds are very hard to find in Sri Lanka. Even in Family Suites, fold-away beds will be usually provided. Interconnecting Rooms are however found in most hotels.

How Much Travelling Is Involved?

Quite a bit. This tour is recommended for families who are used to travel and don’t mind long journeys in order to see everything that is worth seeing in the island.

Is This Tour Suitable For A Family With Small Children?

Yes, but you need to consider a few issues. There is quite a bit of travel involved in touring the whole of Sri Lanka. Sigiriya can be a steep climb for young children. We would not recommend the ascent to the summit for safety reasons. The Jeep Safari’s at Minneriya and Yala can be a bit bumpy at times.

Is It Possible Do This Tour Using Resort Type Hotels?

Yes, just let us know. We use a selection of villa type hotels at some locations for this tour in order to keep costs down and to make touring in Sri Lanka affordable for families at a reasonable level of comfort and luxury.

Is It Possible To Incorporate White Water Rafting To This Tour?

Yes, with an early morning start you can get to Kithulgala from Kandy on good roads within 2 hours for a morning rafting session and travel afterwards to your hotel in the Hill Country. There is a minimum 11 year age limit for rafting.

Is Yala Open Year Round?

Yala has remained open all year round for the past few years and we expect this to contiue but there is no guarantee. If Yala is closed in September – October we will include Uda Walawe National Park instead.

Is It Easy To Stay On The Deep South Beaches After This Tour?

Yes, this tour is ideal for a beach stay in and around Galle.

Encounters With Leopards And Wild Elephants At Yala

The island’s big cat is attracted by the presence of large herds of Spotted Deer, Sambar (Elk) and Wild Boar that comprise its staple diet.

Apart from the wildlife, the stunning landscapes at Yala consist of strange shaped rock outcrops that are the ideal habitat of the aggressive Sloth Bear and a coastline dotted with beautiful lagoons harbouring migratory flamingoes and ferocious Marsh Crocodiles.

Around 100 Elephants are also found in and around the park. Today there are said to be 18 to 20 ‘tuskers’ in the reserve, including some huge ‘cross-tuskers’.

"I have just returned from a 2 week holiday in Sri Lanka where I booked a 6 day overland tour through Elephant Island.

Absolutely faultless. The detailed itinerary put together by Amanda at EI incorporated absolutely everything we wanted to do and gave us a fantastic overview of Sri Lanka, its culture, its wildlife and its history.

Our driver Rohan was exceptional. He drove us with care, explained everything in detail and offered us numerous additional stops for activities such as elephant rides, a look around Kandy market and a trip to Nuwara Eliya. I would make sure, next time I go to Sri Lanka, that I had Rohan driving me around.

If you're going to Sri Lanka you MUST book through EI! The whole process was so smooth and ensured that I had the most amazing time in what is surely one of the world's most beautiful countries."
