Locations Visited On This Tour

Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage

The island’s No 1 visitor attraction is a very relaxed place to spend in the company of 70 elephants.

Kandy

A very pretty town and the gateway to the Hill Country with lots of quaint reminders of colonial era Ceylon.

The Hill Country By Train

Beautiful mountain ranges covered with tea plantations and amazing waterfalls that are best experienced by train.

Yala National Park

One of the great national parks of Asia and the best location in the world to spot Leopards in the wild.

Galle

The ramparts of an Old Dutch Fort enclose a perfectly preserved town full of historic colonial buildings.

Beach Stay – Should You Choose The West Coast or East Coast?

From November to April, the West, South West and Deep South of the island experiences fine weather and calm seas. The tropical scenery and well established resorts make these areas popular even during the Summer months of July and August even though seas are slightly rough.

From May to October, the amazing East Coast beaches are among the finest in the entire world with shallow seas where you can just wade out for hundreds of feet into the sea!

Why Do This Tour?

An ideal tour for nature lovers, and those who love landscapes and superb mountain scenery – attributes that Sri Lanka has in abundance.

From Colombo, visit the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage on the way to Kandy, where the only temple on the tour is included, the atmospheric Temple Of The Buddha’s Tooth.

Then head to the mountains, with a train journey through cloud forests to the Eastern Hill Country with dramatic views of the plains below.

Yala is one of Asia’s premier game reserves, where you have a good chance of spotting a leopard. Onwards to the quaint backstreets of Galle with maze of historic streets protected by the ramparts of a Dutch fort.

Your tour will end with a return to Colombo on the beautiful South Coast Road, passing picture-postcard tropical landscapes of the Deep South and South West of the island. A beach stay in addition to this tour will make a fantastic 2 week holiday in Sri Lanka.

Recommended For: Anyone who wishes to experience Sri Lanka without its temples!

Frequestly Asked Questions About This Tour?

How Much Travelling Is Involved?

Not much by road because the Hill Country is crossed by train from Kandy to Ella. All roads are highly scenic.

Is It Possible To Stay At Nuwara Eliya In The Western Hill Country?

Yes, but it will take about 5 or 6 hours to get to Yala from the Western Hill Country.

Is Yala Open Year Round?

Yala usually closes for a month with the beginning of the dry season in the South East of the island. This is usually for about 30 days anytime between 01/09 and 31/10 of each year. The park closes to avoid stress on wildlife as they search for water among the dwindling water-holes with the onset of the dry season. During this time visitors can opt to visit either UdaWalaweNational Park (1.5 Hours away) or Bundala National Park (40 minutes away), both of which stay open throughout the year.

Is It Easy To Stay On The Deep South Beaches After This Tour?

Yes, this tour is ideal for a beach stay in and around Galle.

Depending on the time of day, you can watch the little baby calves some only a few weeks old are fed by bottle and the whole herd is then bathed in the adjoining river. A not to be missed experience.

Temple Of The Buddha’s Tooth

Delightfully located in a valley surrounded by hills, Kandy was the last capital of the ancient kings. The UNESCO protected Old Town area is a lovely place for an afternoon walk along a maze of streets leading to the Temple Of The Buddha’s Tooth and the Kandy Lake, magnificently framed against forest clad hills in the background.

Visit The Temple Of The Buddha’s Tooth in the evening, for the ‘’pooja ceremony’’ that starts around 6:30 pm. At this time crowds gather to offer flowers and prayers to the sacred relic in the inner sanctum and the temple drummers are in full swing – a magical experience.

Encounters With Leopards And Wild Elephants At Yala

The jewel among Sri Lanka’s wildlife reserves and one of Asia’s premier sanctuaries is justifiably famous for its population of Leopards that can easily be observed hunting and lazing around during daylight hours. The island’s big cat is attracted by the presence of large herds of Spotted Deer, Sambar (Elk) and Wild Boar that comprise its staple diet.

Apart from the wildlife, the stunning landscapes at Yala consist of strange shaped rock outcrops that are the ideal habitat of the aggressive Sloth Bear and a coastline dotted with beautiful lagoons harbouring migratory flamingoes and ferocious Marsh Crocodiles.

Around 100 Elephants are also found in and around the park. Today there are said to be 18 to 20 ‘tuskers’ in the reserve, including some huge ‘cross-tuskers’.

"We have returned from an excellent holiday in Sri Lanka.

Elephant Island Tours is a truly customer focused organisation. Our first connect was with Justin in the London Office. He listened carefully to understand our particular needs and apparitions. We were most impressed by his speed of reply, helpful suggestions and advice. The tour fulfilled all our needs. You cannot overestimate the importance of the first contact - Thank you Justin.

The shop window of your organisation was our driver guide Mahendra. He proved to be very knowledgeable and a brilliant driver. He quickly became our friend. He was so helpful in all ways He never let us down. The car was more than adequate for our needs and always clean - Thank you Mahendra."

"I have just returned from a 2 week holiday in Sri Lanka where I booked a 6 day overland tour through Elephant Island.

Absolutely faultless. The detailed itinerary put together by Amanda at EI incorporated absolutely everything we wanted to do and gave us a fantastic overview of Sri Lanka, its culture, its wildlife and its history.

Our driver Rohan was exceptional. He drove us with care, explained everything in detail and offered us numerous additional stops for activities such as elephant rides, a look around Kandy market and a trip to Nuwara Eliya. I would make sure, next time I go to Sri Lanka, that I had Rohan driving me around.

If you're going to Sri Lanka you MUST book through EI! The whole process was so smooth and ensured that I had the most amazing time in what is surely one of the world's most beautiful countries."
