Overview

The ancestral home of one of Kandy's most influential aristocratic families, Ratwatte Walauwa was built by Chief Minister Ratwatte Adigar in 1804. It is located on the eastern hills of the town on a spice estate. This beautifully restored manor house still retains the atmosphere of a private country mansion of the British Raj while providing seclusion and serenity in a lovely countryside setting amidst a spice estate of rolling hills on the edge of Kandy. The luxury boutique hotel has nine suites set around a magnificent central courtyard.

Rooms

The bedrooms are the finest in Kandy, with four-poster beds, soft white linen, concrete-washed bathrooms and antique bathtubs. Nine luxury suites are filled with Dutch antique furniture, each with a colonial character brought to life with contemporary silks and cottons. Four poster beds are provided within each room and floor to ceiling shutter windows overlook the gardens. The modern en suite bathrooms feature showers and a Victorian bathtub.

Deluxe Rooms

Monkey Puzzle Sunbeam and Lime Butterfly are spacious rooms on the ground floor.

Super Deluxe Rooms

Indian Red Admiral Cornelian and The Pioneer are three main Gallery Rooms with en suite bathrooms that circle the atrium courtyard.

Ultra Deluxe Rooms

Black Rajah Garden Suite, Peacock Royal and Red Spot Duke Rooms are located on the front and sides of the house are 3 Verandah Suites that are very spacious and boast their own verandah overlooking the front pepper estate.

Fine Dining

Guests can dine in style in the wonderful original dining room or less formally on the verandah overlooking the Kandyan hills. The daily menu is dominated with fresh local produce but the chef takes inspiration from around the world. The hotel offers 24-hour room service.

Facilities

The main house is on two stories with a central atrium courtyard, typical of many colonial homes to circulate the air. There is a sweeping Jackwood staircase and the central sitting room opens on to the verandah where the sun streams in during the early evenings.

There is a stunning swimming pool landscaped into the surrounding paddy fields.

What We Say

The Kandy House is one of the most in-demand deluxe properties in Sri Lanka. There is a small issue of its location being slightly away from the town centre, but once you get there it rarely fails to disappoint. A masterful renovation by architect Channa Daswatte manages to brilliantly combine the essence of colonial era splendour with tropical modernism.

Best Time To Go

The best time to visit Kandy is undoubtedly during July or August of each year when the 10 night Kandy Perahera Festival transforms the city into an amazing spectacle of colour and street processions.

Elephant Island Tours is a truly customer focused organisation. Our first connect was with Justin in the London Office. He listened carefully to understand our particular needs and apparitions. We were most impressed by his speed of reply, helpful suggestions and advice. The tour fulfilled all our needs. You cannot overestimate the importance of the first contact - Thank you Justin.

The shop window of your organisation was our driver guide Mahendra. He proved to be very knowledgeable and a brilliant driver. He quickly became our friend. He was so helpful in all ways He never let us down. The car was more than adequate for our needs and always clean - Thank you Mahendra."

"I have just returned from a 2 week holiday in Sri Lanka where I booked a 6 day overland tour through Elephant Island.

Absolutely faultless. The detailed itinerary put together by Amanda at EI incorporated absolutely everything we wanted to do and gave us a fantastic overview of Sri Lanka, its culture, its wildlife and its history.

Our driver Rohan was exceptional. He drove us with care, explained everything in detail and offered us numerous additional stops for activities such as elephant rides, a look around Kandy market and a trip to Nuwara Eliya. I would make sure, next time I go to Sri Lanka, that I had Rohan driving me around.

If you're going to Sri Lanka you MUST book through EI! The whole process was so smooth and ensured that I had the most amazing time in what is surely one of the world's most beautiful countries."
