Overview

The Fort Printers, is an 18th century mansion which has been painstakingly restored with teakwood doors, windows and floors into a fully serviced luxury villa hotel, comprising 5 opulent suites offering understated elegance and personal  service in an intimate, friendly atmosphere. The villa is located in the historic Galle Fort, a 16th century Dutch colonial fort and now designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The villa traces its origins to the Dutch period but substantial additions were made in the English era after 1796, including high ceilings and large windows.

Fort Printers was a printing company famous in Galle that until 2002 still employed the wooden printing blocks and wrought iron printing machines made in Leeds and London to print beautiful stationery and cards.

Rooms

Standard Suites

All suites are air-conditioned and elegantly furnished with a mixture of classic and contemporary hand-made furniture and accessories. In recognition of its past as a college, the suites are named The Headmaster's, The Prefect's, History, Geography, and Arts.

Four suites are located on the first floor, overlooking the beautiful tiled roofs of the Fort houses, the harbour and the lighthouse. These suites are entered via a magnificent gallery with polished jack wood floors and antique ceiling beams.

Each suite is elegantly furnished with a large platform bed, an oversized chaise lounge, and a writing desk. The bathroom behind the antique jack wood walls includes a separate toilet and shower. The copper shower room has a green glazed celadon tiled floor. The suites open onto a large gallery with polished wood floors and louvered windows overlooking Pedlar Street, furnished with colourful daybeds.

Deluxe Suites

The highly private Prefect's Suite is located on the ground floor in the courtyard and overlooks the pool.  The Headmaster's Suite has a magnificent sitting platform giving splendid views of the setting sun towards the Galle Lighthouse.

Dining

The Dining Room comprises the whole length of the mansion and is an intimate setting for both lavish and informal dining.  There is a sitting area to one end of the dining room for informal cocktails and snacks and after-meal naps.  The dining room is furnished with a mix of hand-made oriental and contemporary furniture and accessories.

The meals are imaginatively prepared by two chefs and include traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry (which includes several vegetable dishes and at least one fish or meat curry) and fresh and vibrant Mediterranean inspired dishes. As yellow fin tuna is indigenous to the area, you can expect to find dishes with sashimi grilled or seared tuna.

Breakfast usually includes fresh tropical fruits, fresh fruit juices, home cooked cereals, eggs, fresh curds and home made breads or any other special requests  such as frittatas, hot cakes or Sri Lankan hoppers. Lunch may include fresh salads, grilled tuna or open-faced sandwiches. Dinner is generally a lavish affair with specialties such as grilled lobster, seared tuna or delicious Sri Lankan curries.

The hotel has a staff of 6, including two chefs, who provide a friendly and personal service.

Facilities

The Drawing Room with high ceilings is well appointed with deep sofas and seating alcoves under ceiling-high original teakwood windows which open onto the gallery. The drawing room is an ideal place to relax with a book during the day and hear the world pass by or have evening drinks in the soft copper lighting and appreciate the quiet of the dusk.

The Library is elegantly furnished with comfortable custom-designed sofas and colorful cushions and contains a selection of books, magazines, DVD library and CDs and player.

What We Say

The Fort Printers is a great place to stay if you are looking for up-market accommodation inside the Dutch Fort at Galle. It has exactly the right mix of intimacy and privacy along with the colonial era ambience that attracts visitors to sample hotel properties inside the Fort itself. Narrow roads and alleyways spread out from here in all directions. A walk along these in the evenings really gives you that ‘timewarp’ feeling: its easy to think of how things would have been 200 years ago!

"We have returned from an excellent holiday in Sri Lanka.

Elephant Island Tours is a truly customer focused organisation. Our first connect was with Justin in the London Office. He listened carefully to understand our particular needs and apparitions. We were most impressed by his speed of reply, helpful suggestions and advice. The tour fulfilled all our needs. You cannot overestimate the importance of the first contact - Thank you Justin.

The shop window of your organisation was our driver guide Mahendra. He proved to be very knowledgeable and a brilliant driver. He quickly became our friend. He was so helpful in all ways He never let us down. The car was more than adequate for our needs and always clean - Thank you Mahendra."

"I have just returned from a 2 week holiday in Sri Lanka where I booked a 6 day overland tour through Elephant Island.

Absolutely faultless. The detailed itinerary put together by Amanda at EI incorporated absolutely everything we wanted to do and gave us a fantastic overview of Sri Lanka, its culture, its wildlife and its history.

Our driver Rohan was exceptional. He drove us with care, explained everything in detail and offered us numerous additional stops for activities such as elephant rides, a look around Kandy market and a trip to Nuwara Eliya. I would make sure, next time I go to Sri Lanka, that I had Rohan driving me around.

If you're going to Sri Lanka you MUST book through EI! The whole process was so smooth and ensured that I had the most amazing time in what is surely one of the world's most beautiful countries."
