Overview

The Elephant Stables is a beautiful colonial era bungalow on a hill overlooking Kandy. The property was originally constructed by Adigar Sir Cudah Ratwatte. Adigar Ratwatte was a Ceylonese, the first elected mayor of Kandy and the first person from Kandy to be awarded a knighthood from the British.

The Elephant Stables has been lovingly restored with a combination of original mid-century colonial furnishings and modern chic interiors that enable guests to feel the ambience of old Ceylon while enjoying all the luxuries of an exclusive boutique property.

The hotel is located only 10 minutes away from the historic Old Town area of Kandy but on a private road high on a hill giving amazing views of the mist covered Knuckles Mountain range in the distance.

Unlike many other luxury boutique hotels in Sri Lanka, The Elephant Stables welcomes families.

Things That Will Make You Go Wow!

▪ The architecture and interior design is gorgeous. A unique mix of Colonial themes with chic designer touches that works amazingly well.

▪ This is a fantastic place for experiencing Sri Lankan cuisine, and traditional ‘Rice And Curry’ meal options are highly rated.

▪ There are great views on all sides as the hotel is perched on a hilltop. The view from the front over the Matterhorn-like Hunas Falls and Knuckles Mountains is superb.

The Downside

▪ There are only 6 rooms and suites so it’s a boutique hotel in the true sense of the word. It is therefore important to know that it does not have the facilities of a large resort hotel.

How Much Does It Cost To Stay There?

Approximately GBP 160 BB per room per night

Activities And Excursions

▪ The hotel has a great collection of vintage and classic cars that are available for use by hotel guests. Sightseeing tours of Kandy are easily arranged in one of the vehicles. You can hire a selection of old Austins, a Morris 8 and even a Mini Moke – great for kids!

The historic UNESCO World Heritage town centre of Kandy is a mere 10 minutes away. Here you can visit the Temple Of The Buddha’s Tooth (recommended even for ‘templed out’ travellers) which is best visited during the evening pooja when the sound of the temple drummers and lighting of thousands of oil lamps makes this a highly atmospheric experience.

"We have returned from an excellent holiday in Sri Lanka.

Elephant Island Tours is a truly customer focused organisation. Our first connect was with Justin in the London Office. He listened carefully to understand our particular needs and apparitions. We were most impressed by his speed of reply, helpful suggestions and advice. The tour fulfilled all our needs. You cannot overestimate the importance of the first contact - Thank you Justin.

The shop window of your organisation was our driver guide Mahendra. He proved to be very knowledgeable and a brilliant driver. He quickly became our friend. He was so helpful in all ways He never let us down. The car was more than adequate for our needs and always clean - Thank you Mahendra."

"I have just returned from a 2 week holiday in Sri Lanka where I booked a 6 day overland tour through Elephant Island.

Absolutely faultless. The detailed itinerary put together by Amanda at EI incorporated absolutely everything we wanted to do and gave us a fantastic overview of Sri Lanka, its culture, its wildlife and its history.

Our driver Rohan was exceptional. He drove us with care, explained everything in detail and offered us numerous additional stops for activities such as elephant rides, a look around Kandy market and a trip to Nuwara Eliya. I would make sure, next time I go to Sri Lanka, that I had Rohan driving me around.

If you're going to Sri Lanka you MUST book through EI! The whole process was so smooth and ensured that I had the most amazing time in what is surely one of the world's most beautiful countries."
