The West Coast - Negombo

Long Wide Beaches, Nightlife With Bars And Restaurants

The West Coast - Negombo

Overview

Negombo

Sri Lanka’s largest beach resort is only 15 minutes from the Airport. If you do not like long transfers, this is just about the best option for a beach holiday or end of tour beach stay in Sri Lanka. It is also a great choice if you want a stopover night to relax on the beach on arrival prior to the start of an island tour, or to recharge yourself after a long flight.

The main resort area lies to the north of town along a beach road called Lewis Place, where lots of local restaurants, shops and bars alternate between beach hotels that are aimed at a mix of budget, 3 star and 5 star holidaymakers. Negombo therefore attracts a very cosmopolitan group of holidaymakers, which is very nice in itself.

Waikkal And Marawila

These are quiet resorts among fishing villages to the north of Negombo that are also ideal for those who do not want long Airport transfers. The hotels tend to be ‘club’ concept with all-inclusive accommodation and meal options. They have the advantage of easy access for day trips to the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, Kandy and even the Cultural Triangle if you get away with an early morning start.

Quality Of The Beach

Negombo

Negombo contains a long, sandy beach that is very wide in places, especially towards the northern end. It is ideal for beach games like football and volleyball. The sea is not very suitable for sea-bathing as it shelves sharply from the beach.

Waikkal And Marawila

One can’t truthfully say that the beaches here are that great as there is a lot of sea erosion on this coastline. The big resorts regularly make artificial beaches by pumping sand from the sea. The sea is not at all suitable for sea-bathing due to strong currents.

Watersports, Diving And Snorkelling

Diving is possible on outer reefs from November – April. The closer dive sites are about 5 to 8 Km away from the shore. For experienced divers only (30 minute boat ride) there is a further "third" reef (about 22 Km away).

Best Time To Go

Winter Season: November - April

The beaches are at their best at this time with fine weather and calm seas.

Summer Season: May – October

During the off season, Negombo becomes a lot quieter but is still popular as summer holidaymakers use the resort as a stopover for a day or two on arrival or prior to departure from the island.

Getting To The Airport

Airport – Negombo (Lewis Place): 20 Minutes

Airport – Waikkal: 40 Minutes

Airport – Marawila: 1 Hour

Top Tips For A Beach Stay At Negombo

1. Negombo is ideal for a stopover night on arrival in the island. By staying at Negombo you can avoid the traffic and hassle of travelling to Colombo from the Airport (1 hour) and getting out of Colombo in the ‘mad’ morning rush hour prior to the start of your tour.

2. Negombo is also ideal for a stopover night prior to departure from the island, especially if you are travelling from the East Coast Beaches that are 5 or 6 hours away from the Airport, or even the Deep South resorts such as Tangalle.

3. The beach at Negombo gets a lot better and wider towards the northern end of Lewis Place.

4. If you are on a budget, check out the smaller hotels and guesthouses that are not on the beach itself but on roads leading from Lewis Place. These are much cheaper and the beach is still only a 5 minute walk away!

5. Negombo town itself holds little of interest to tourists, except for some huge Roman Catholic Cathedrals that are a feature of this part of the island. Most holidaymakers tend to socialise around the beach and Lewis Place.

 Excursions And Things To Do?

 • The town of Negombo has a very famous and busy Fisheries Market. If this is of interest, you can get up early morning and see the ‘catch of the day’ being brought in from hundreds of boats and auctioned.

• Negombo Lagoon is beautiful and sunset Boat Cruises are an amazing experience.

• Towards the shallow end of the lagoon lies the Muthurajawela Marsh Sanctuary with huge crocodiles waiting for you in the mangroves!

• The capital city of Colombo is only 1 hour away by local taxi. Things to do here include shopping at department stores like Odel, House Of Fashion (very cheap clothes) and up-market handicrafts and textiles at The Barefoot Gallery. It’s a great experience to dine at either The Verandah at The Galle Face Hotel or The Terrace at The Mount Lavinia Hotel.

"I have just returned from a 2 week holiday in Sri Lanka where I booked a 6 day overland tour through Elephant Island.

Absolutely faultless. The detailed itinerary put together by Amanda at EI incorporated absolutely everything we wanted to do and gave us a fantastic overview of Sri Lanka, its culture, its wildlife and its history.

Our driver Rohan was exceptional. He drove us with care, explained everything in detail and offered us numerous additional stops for activities such as elephant rides, a look around Kandy market and a trip to Nuwara Eliya. I would make sure, next time I go to Sri Lanka, that I had Rohan driving me around.

If you're going to Sri Lanka you MUST book through EI! The whole process was so smooth and ensured that I had the most amazing time in what is surely one of the world's most beautiful countries."
