The Deep South - Mirissa

Mirissa has without doubt the best beach in the Deep South of Sri Lanka. It is a place discovered by travellers seeking to move away from the commercial blight that has overtaken Unawatuna in recent years and has become the destination of choice for budget travellers seeking a relaxed chilled out holiday on an idyllic tropical beach.

The recent explosion in Whale Watching in Sri Lanka has really put Mirissa in the spotlight as most of the Whale Watching Boats operate from the adjacent Mirissa Fisheries Harbour.

Mirissa consists of secluded crescent shaped beaches and the shoreline is blanketed with a long line of coconut trees. Unlike at Unawatuna, the guesthouses and hotels at Mirissa are set back from the shore which gives a very pleasing tropical ambience.

Weligama is a stunning bay which is adjacent to the Mirissa headland. It is generally thought of as one of the most beaufiful bays in the entire world, with the tiny island home of Count de Mauny-Talvande and other tiny islets popping up from the Indian Ocean.

Quality Of The Beach

Mirissa has one of Sri Lanka’s safest beaches. The shoreline of Mirissa gracefully slides into the ocean so there is no dangerous shelving making it a great place to bring kids and to leave them alone without too much worry. You can walk out into the water for about 20 meters before the water becomes waist deep.

The beach at Weligama is not fantastic, although the views are fabulous. A local taxi will take you to Mirissa a mere 10 minutes away!

Watersports, Diving And Snorkelling

Mirissa is good for snorkeling and surfing. The area around Parrot Rock on the left side of the bay is particularally popular with snorkellers while the right side of Mirissa Beach is rapidly becoming a popular surfing hot spot. There is also excellent snorkeling at Weligama Bay.

Best Time To Go

Winter Season: November - April

The beaches are at their best at this time with fine weather and calm seas.

Summer Season: May – October

During the off season, Mirissa becomes quiet and sea gets a bit rough but it is still popular especially at weekends with crowds from Colombo coming to spend the day here.

Getting To The Airport

Airport – Mirissa: 3.5 Hours Via Southern Expressway
Airport – Weligama : 3.5 Hours Via Southern Expressway

Top Tips For A Beach Stay At Mirissa And Weligama

1. There are no up-market or luxury hotels on the beach at Mirissa. If you wish to stay within easy access of Mirissa but require a bit of luxury, then you can base yourself at one of the 4 star hotels on the idyllic Weligama Bay, just 10 minutes away from Mirissa.

2. Whale Watching trips from Mirissa Fisheries Harbour are possible between November and April of each year. They start at 6:30 am in the morning and are of around 4 hours in duration. Please note that these are entirely dependent on the weather and sea conditions on a particular day.

Choose a reputable boat operator as the realisation that Sri Lanka is probably the best location in the world to go Whale Watching has resulted in a huge rush of boats with inexperienced crews arriving on the scene.

3. It’s a long, long journey to get to Mirissa from Dambulla, Kandy or the Western Hill Country. It is highly recommended that you have a stopover night somewhere on the way.

"I have just returned from a 2 week holiday in Sri Lanka where I booked a 6 day overland tour through Elephant Island.

Absolutely faultless. The detailed itinerary put together by Amanda at EI incorporated absolutely everything we wanted to do and gave us a fantastic overview of Sri Lanka, its culture, its wildlife and its history.

Our driver Rohan was exceptional. He drove us with care, explained everything in detail and offered us numerous additional stops for activities such as elephant rides, a look around Kandy market and a trip to Nuwara Eliya. I would make sure, next time I go to Sri Lanka, that I had Rohan driving me around.

If you're going to Sri Lanka you MUST book through EI! The whole process was so smooth and ensured that I had the most amazing time in what is surely one of the world's most beautiful countries."
